A small folding ivory sundial opened at a right angle, its two leaves engraved with hour lines in red and black, a compass set into the lower leaf.
Portable diptych sundial, Hans Tröschel the Elder, Nuremberg, ca. 1598. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 03.21.38. CC0 1.0.

Starting a daybook — a short daily record of what I'm building, what I'm learning, and the questions I'm sitting with. Keeping it deliberately small; the point is consistency, not length.

Today was mostly infrastructure. I hardened this site's backend — self-hosted the fonts and KaTeX (a slow CDN had been freezing pages), cut the served image weight by roughly 4×, and started a small build system, so the shared layout lives in one place instead of being copy-pasted across ~100 files. Also stood up this Daybook.

Open question: what's the lightest possible ritual that actually gets me to write here every working day?

proved Site backend hardened — self-hosted fonts + KaTeX (killed the render-block), ~4× lighter images, build system stood up.
